Common Difficulties When Learning English for First-Year Students Major English Language at University of Phan Thiet and Proposed Solutions

Abstract

This study aims to explore the challenges that first-year students majoring in 
English Language at the Faculty of Foreign Languages, University of Phan Thiet, have to face and propose solutions to support them before embarking on a new journey in their studies. The analysis is based on data collected from surveys of students from classes K14NNA1, K14NNA2, K15NNA1, and K15NNA2 at the Faculty of Foreign Languages, along with interviews with 05 lecturers responsible for teaching these classes. The synthesized research results identify common issues and limitations in English language knowledge that students encounter when studying at the high school. Accordingly, proposed solutions by the lecturers are recognized to equip students with a better understanding of their shortcomings and limitations. The goal of the study is to guide these student how to overcome difficulties, enhance academic performance, and contribute to achieving success in their future lives when transitioning to real work environments.
